End term exams for the second semester begin next week. I’m neck deep in work related to college fests and the Internet Solutions Group. The subjects for this term are too mathematical for my liking.
1. Risk Management : Where we revisit Markov Chains, derive Black Scholes and work out problems in option pricing. Do I really need to know all this?
2. Operations Research : Where we do the famous PERT/CPM, study Data Envelopment Analysis and revisit Linear Programming’s bigger meaner brother, Integer Programming.
3. Macroeconomics : Where we discuss the open economy, comparitive advantage, the Phillips curve and what not. This is very interesting actually.
4. Cost Accounting : This is interesting too. We figure out how companies budget for cost, what are the different methods for cost accounting, and how managerial decisions have cost implications.
5. Information Technology Systems : This half-term we study excel modelling. We’re modelling various business cases to aid managerial decision making. This has been the most “value add”, if you’ll pardon the term. I’ve learnt a good deal of excel and am already using it in real life for our annual fest.
Talking of Intaglio, I’m one of the organisers for Curiosio where “metrics” become more important than quality (and these restrictions are self-imposed mind you.) It sort of explains why Aaj Tak knows its shitty and why it remains that way. Because it sells
But no, our quizzes are not shitty in the least. They are just “compromised”. We try hard to maintain a balance.
There are also a bunch of other contests you can take part in, esp. if you are a B-School students. So, again, do check out the site, if you have not done so already.

There is a legend in college about the quizzing superpowers of Arnav Sinha and Vijay Anand Menon. They won A LOT of quizzes in their two years – even though the quality of these “business type” quizzes is still under investigation.
Now they have demeaned their superpowers by offering their quizmastering selves to you for a fee. So pay up – and avail yourself of the services of MnA – IIM Calcutta’s first quizzing company (or not).
As Nehru so famously said – “ A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when […] the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.” All my repressed quizzing brethren, I cannot vouch for their quizzes – but if the quality of the punning by this guy is anything to go by, then you surely will have some fun.

You must have noticed the decreased frequency and the corresponding decrease in the length of the posts. This indicates a surfeit of activity, which funnily means shorter and more irregular blogging. Such are the funny ways of the internet.
But here are some random disparate points before I forget them
1. Our hostel-batch combo will always be remembered by the “1:49” byline. Long live the rotund pieces of rubber on which vehicles move!
2. CV making is positively exhausting work. You never thought that there is so much to think about. Not until you come here.
3. Classes, academics and quizzes are a constantly running backdrop against which all the different actors come and go. Induction, parties, competitions, placements – the list is unending. But the reader must always remember to add “and 3/4 classes a day” too. We often take it for granted!
4. I shall be doing much travelling this month. And being in freakin’ Kolkata this means I have to take a flight to get to anywhere useful in a humane amount of time. First I am off to Bangalore tomorrow because one of my entries got short-listed for the finals. This is for IIMB’s Eximius
5. Then the week after I’m off to get my ass kicked at the famous inter IIT-IIM quiz fest Nihilanth. My team-mates better be good!
So that is all for now. Much things have to be done, and much things I’m doing as I write this. Hasta la vista!

I forgot David Bradley’s name in a quiz. Again. And just so that I don’t forget the next time, Linus works for Transmeta Corporation
In totally unrelated news, we won the quiz.
