Back to campus!
I am writing this sitting on one of those uniquely pink coloured chairs that dot the IIM Calcutta library, soaking in the drafts of cool air that the A/C throws at me, while the poor green plants outside long for a drop of rain to cool their dry exteriors. This is my first real experience of the famed Calcutta weather. It is undoubtedly nasty. You would assume that both Bombay and Calcutta would have similar summertime weather. Now, even though summers in Bombay are no walk in the park, I never found living there in May a right tocherous prison sentence as I do now. Fortunately the rains are predicted to be only a couple of days away – so all should be fine.
On an academic note, classes have started. I’ve drowned myself in courses offered by the information systems department here, a decision which I’m thinking I might regret. But with smaller classes and a more concerted effort on the prof’s part could mean a more rewarding academic experience. I’m about to begin a class in “Computational Intelligence in Finance and Business” in an hour from now – and the reading list, which just came out is a mind-boggling 23 pages long! Now, these are not the readings themselves, but just a plain list (along with 3/4 line descriptions) of a variety of papers on the topic. I hope he does not expect us to read all of them! Plus this would be the first time I would be using Matlab, so that should be fun.
Another interesting class today was “ICT for Effectiveness”. We never did Shannon’s Information Theory while doing Comp. Sci, and today’s class was spent understanding the same. Apart from the enlgihtening walk-through into science history that the prof offered, the theory and its propositions itself were quite wonderful.
Of course, one balances “heavy” courses with light ones, and I hope the courses in Ecommerce and Strategic HRM prove to be that for me. Else it’s going to be a load too heavy to handle!
I’m getting the feeling that I’m going to be blogging more frequently this year; multiple times in a week as against, multiple times in a month. Lets hope that this prediction proves to be true.
