Clog Away!

BTW, I’m going to be referring to this as a “clog”. This is meant to stand for “Calcutta Log”, but I generally like the name, and the image of clogged sewers overflowing with crap is a fitting metaphor for this place.

Hence don’t be surprised if I use sentences like, “Clogging will be lax for a while, I have a mid-sem coming up.” or “This clog is going places.”

The only exception will be the intro text you see to your right. That is just to orient people and not to scare them away. Hence familiar words.

This is partly inspired by Randall Munroe’s xkcd comic about how he likes to deliberately mispronounce stuff.

Also noteworthy is Ramanand’s IITB blog where he presents a thousand stupid variations of the school of IT he was studying in.

See, it helps to have influences!

Preface

Here is what usually happens before one gets into IIMC.

  • One is very confused as to to what to do with life. One is good at generally putting bullshit and making it sound real.
  • One looks up possible professions and finds out that they actually pay you obscene amounts to actually do that.
  • One then realizes that you need to hone these skills and the best option one has, is to go to one of the IIMs.
  • One realizes that getting into one of these places is not that easy after all, and one has to write this exam called the Common Aptitude Test
  • About 250,000 people take this exam each year. Yours truly says, “hey, if so many people are doing this, then maybe I should too”.
  • By freak chance yours truly takes the exam, secures 99.65 percentile(which means, to yours truly’s extreme incredulity that 99.65 percent of the people who took the exam are actually dumber that yours truly.) and receives IIM calls.
  • However like every good Hindi movie, this one comes with its cruel twists of fate. Yours truly gets a question from one of his favourite series of books wrong commencing a chain of events which culminates in yours truly missing the IIM Ahmedabad english cutoff by 1 mark.
  • Yours truly then takes GDs, interviews for IIM Calcutta, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore.
  • Yours truly finds out on May 1st that IIM Calcutta has indeed accepted to bear the burden of educating him for a couple of years.
  • Yours truly heaves a sigh of relief – accepts his fate, and decides to go. He shall teach the folks in Joka never to make such a mistake again.

Welcome to my IIM Calcutta Blog!

Come June the 18th, I shall be joining the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. The intent is to document all the fun stuff that happens there. This is chiefly for myself, as I find the whole process personally rewarding and I feel it will give me something concrete to look back upon, once the years have zipped by.

Of course, the major aim is to keep going despite the rigours of the course. I have blogged long enough to realize that starting is easy and continuing is not. Hence, the one and only aim of this blog is to keep going – at all costs!
